What are they?
Lip fillers are made of synthetic hyaluronic acid which is a naturally occurring, clear and lubricating substance. In the body it is found in the skin, inside joints, in the eye sockets and in other tissues where it can help retain moisture and improve elasticity and flexibility.
What are they for?
During the ageing process the volume of the lips starts to decrease and may have reduced by up to 50% by the age of 50. This can cause the lips to look flatter and wider and have less projection. Lip fillers can be used to enhance the shape and volume of lips for younger and older clients seeking to restore volume or reinvent their look. For definition of the lip outline, filler is introduced all around the lip border. For enhanced volume, lip filler is administered into the border and into the body of the lips.
How does it work?
Lip fillers contain different length strands of hyaluronic acid which, once administered, are able to absorb water and increase in size to provide a youthful plumpness to the lips. The different fillers available contain different complexes of strands to provide a natural, moderate or dramatic difference to your lips.

How are Lip fillers administered?
Lip fillers are injected into the lips using a fine needle at several points along the lip border and into the body of the lip. Numbing cream is applied to the lips first for half an hour and all the fillers used at this practice contain anaesthetic in the syringe which prolongs the numbness. Having lip fillers administered is painful and the intensity varies from patient to patient. The most pain is felt on inserting the needle and tends to dissipate once the needle is removed from the lip.
After treatment
The lips will be swollen and may appear larger than desired however this will settle in a few days. The filler starts to attract moisture and the plumping effect will continue for two weeks at which point you will be asked to return for an assessment of the results. Lip fillers can last between six and nine months.
Side effects
During and after the treatment the lips will swell. This can be due to the presence of anaesthetic in the lips and multiple insertion of the needle which will cause some bleeding and bruising. These visible symptoms will persist for between two to three days and it is important to consider this when scheduling the treatment date. You can apply ice to the lips but must avoid heat or excessive massaging of the lips and refrain from alcohol and vigorous exercise for 24 hours.
